Fashion Inspiration: LYN SLATER – SOPHISTICATED SIMPLICITY

In June you had the chance to see an installation called AGE IS JUST A NUMBER at the Galéria shopping centre, where we presented five influencers over 50 whose approach shows that we have reached the threshold of an era in which the way we dress is no longer about age, but rather about mindset, status, or the occasion we are dressing for. One of them is Lyn Slater.
Lyn is a New Yorker who spent her whole working life as a social worker and professor. She became a fashion blogger and influencer in 2014 (at the age of 61). In academia she felt constrained by convention, both in her writing and in how she presented herself. She began attending courses at fashion schools, which is where the idea of starting a blog was born. Her exceptional taste and style were confirmed when photographers snapped her during New York Fashion Week, taking her for an insider from the fashion industry. After this experience, a friend of Lyn’s called her an “Accidental Icon” – and that is how the blog got its name. Lyn Slater describes her successes, transformations and struggles – and above all the lessons of living boldly after 60 – in her book “How to Be Old: Lessons in Living Boldly From the Accidental Icon”, published in March 2024.

“For me, clothing is a tool for expressing who I am.” – Lyn Slater (70, retired social worker and university professor, fashion blogger)
Her style is based on comfort and black and white. She swears by the classics – quality black trousers, a polo neck and a white shirt, which she often contrasts with a bold colour and accessories such as unique earrings and sunglasses. “I have never followed fashion or trends. But ever since I was little I have used clothing to express who I am and who I would like to be,” says Lyn Slater. “In reality it’s about my identity, which is also shaped by the place and situation I find myself in. I think the key is to ask yourself how your appearance and clothing influence the person you want others to see in you, and what your identity is in each particular situation.”

For the mannequin inspired by fashion icon Lyn Slater, we chose from the stores at the Galéria shopping centre: Jumpsuit and shirt Lindex, shoes CCC, handbag CCC, glasses Street.
