Fashion Inspiration: LUCINDA CHAMBERS – COMFORT

Fashion Inspiration: LUCINDA CHAMBERS – COMFORT

In June you had the chance to see an installation called AGE IS JUST A NUMBER at the Galéria shopping centre, where we presented five influencers over 50 whose approach shows that we have reached the threshold of an era in which the way we dress is no longer about age, but rather about mindset, status, or the occasion we are dressing for. One of them is Lucinda Chambers.

Lucinda Chambers comes from London and discovered her passion for textiles very early on. As a little girl she began collecting eye-catching fabrics and later designing and making her own things, such as accessories for her room, bags and clothes. Her mother had a great influence on her creative talent: she taught her to sew and embroider and also sparked her love of interior design. While studying at art school, she realised she was drawn more to fashion than to art. In total she worked for 36 years at Vogue, where she rose to the position of fashion director. She also held this post for seven years at British Elle. Together with her two business partners, she launched the luxury brand Colville in 2018.

“You will never look stylish if you don’t feel comfortable.” – Lucinda Chambers (65, fashion editor, designer and stylist)

“Dress comfortably, learn to layer, and combine high-street fashion, designer pieces and vintage in one outfit,” advises Lucinda. Her style is just what you would expect from a woman from the fashion world – hard for most people to grasp, but perfect to professionals: she handles colour and proportion very boldly and every look is absolutely contemporary. “I only found my routine after forty. I still sometimes dress in a maximalist way and I love patterns, especially for special occasions, but mostly I build on a neutral base. You can dress quite simply and not look boring – all it takes is a detail that reflects your personality: red lipstick, a statement piece of jewellery, an accessory… Comfort is essential. I have never considered anyone stylish who didn’t look comfortable in their clothes. If you can’t walk in heels, if you can’t run for the bus in a particular skirt, if you can’t sit comfortably on a sofa because something restricts you – don’t wear it. For me, jeans aren’t very comfortable and I don’t wear anything tight. I love layering, even in summer. If I wear a dress on its own, for example, I feel too girlish, so to get into my comfort zone I wear dresses over trousers, often with striking but comfortable shoes.”

For the mannequin inspired by fashion icon Lucinda Chambers, we chose from the stores at the Galéria shopping centre: Trousers and T-shirt Lindex, gilet and windbreaker Street, shoes Street, bum bag and cap Lindex, scarf Pinky Club
